Sliema is a town located in the Central region of Malta and has a population of 16,854 people in an area of just 1.3km². It was once a peaceful fishing village in Marsamxett Harbour overlooking Valletta and therefore named Tas-Sliema, which means comfort and peace but now it’s been heavily built up with modern apartment blocks, shopping malls, restaurants and cafes.

A new church dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea also known as Stella Maris was opened in 1855 and around this church, the village grew in to a town. The town grew so much they it was declared to be its own parish 1878. The town grew even bigger in the second half of the 19th century, Sliema became a holiday place for the wealthy Valletta residents in the hotter months.

In Sliema, you can find a large selection of branded shops and there are two large shopping malls; The Point and The Plaza. The Sliema area is considered to be upmarket with property prices going up all the time. A lot of foreign investment has occurred since the gaming licences legislation was changed with offices sprouting up all over Sliema. The letting market had to accommodate for the many foreign employees that came with these companies and prices inevitably shot up.
