San Gwann is a town located in the Central region of Malta and has a population of 12,523 people in an area of 2.6km². The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes and became an independent parish in 1965 which is considered to be relatively recent.
Even though San Gwann may come across as a modern town, in between buildings, historic places of interest can be found for example the Mensija Cart Ruts. These Ruts date back to the Punic Times in 2300-1000 B.C. and suggest there was an agricultural community in the area, cultivating Wied il-Ballut, Wied Ghomor and Wied Gollieqa.
San Gwann’s main road is a busy shopping area with all kinds of shops to be found, on the outer skirts in the industrial estate many factories have set up here including Foster Clarks and Golden Harvest. At the top end of San Gwann, is where the government housing estate was built in the 1960’s and just opposite you can find the primary school.
Property in San Gwann mainly consists of apartment blocks and terraced houses. In Kappara, which is an upmarket suburb of San Gwann, is built with villas and semi detached townhouses.
