Mellieha is located in the Northern Region of Malta bordering Mgarr and St Pauls Bay, having a population of 10,087 in an area of 22.6km². Mellieha is popular with the Maltese and tourists cause of the nice long sandy beaches, great restaurants and nice atmosphere. The town is divided in three parts with the core of the village being in the upper part around the Parish Church which can be seen from a long distance and Ghadira being in the lower part where the beaches and summer houses are located.

The name Mellieha derives from the Maltese word “melh” which means salt in English and refers to the salt pans which used to exist in Mellieha Bay but has since become Ghadira Nature Reserve.
Mellieha was one of the first parishes on the Island in 1436 but had to be abandoned in the early 16th century due to the constant Muslim corsair raids.
