Hamrun is located in the Eastern region of Malta just 2 kilometers away from the Capital Valletta and has a population of 9,244 people in an area of 1.1km². Hamrun emerged from the three Parishes of Qormi, Birkirkara and Floriana and grew so much that eventually the Parishes of Santa Venera and Marsa emerged from it. The villagers are nicknamed Tas-Sikkina which translates to of the knifereferring to a large amount of Hamrunizi (people from Hamrun) were stevedores on the docks and always carried a knife.
Make sure to see the Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church to see Hamrun’s blessed treasure. In its crypt is buried San Gorg Preca (1880-1962), Dun Gorg, as he is locally known, although born in Valletta, he lived most of his life in Hamrun. His life, works and miracles granted to those faithful to him, led to his beatification in 2001 and recognition as a Saint to all effects in 2007.
Hamrun has three Patron Saints; St Joseph, St Gaetan and the Immaculate Conception, they have three band clubs and two feast days. The feast of St Gaetan is celebrated on the first Sunday after the 7th August where Maltese culture can be seen on full display with the rivalry between the two band clubs, fireworks shows and food stalls. This is a great opportunity for tourists to get a glimpse in to a typical village festa.
Properties in Hamrun vary from large grand townhouses to small houses. Their main road is a busy commercial zone with many small businesses and now the recently opened shopping mall Daniels.
